SEASON I FILMMAKER SERIES

In each episode, filmmakers, artists & musicians from NYC & LA let us in to the scenes they've created.

Queer music has always been anchored by a community
of artists who forsake societal boundaries. In exchange,
artists are granted creative freedom and supportive
peers who celebrate their truth. In this film, director
Wes O'Connor connects with diverse queer musicians like
MUNA, Polartropica, Saturn Risin9 and Rett Madison on
Los Angeles' scene and queer spaces.

In a predominantly white industry, Latinx Indie artists are building a movement. Film director Ambar Navarro explores the cultural cross-pollination rooted in Chicano spirit and style that's brought long-deserved spotlight to artists of the sub-genre. As leaders of the genre reflect on their experiences, it's only a matter of time until these incredibly talented artists enter the mainstream.

Punk's not dead! The raw nature of the Los Angeles punk scene from the 70s and 80s has taken hold of the younger generation. Especially among younger minority women, who have no tolerance for racist, sexist boys. Their DIY ability to organize and implement change within their communities is as punk as it gets.

Director Jeanette D. Moses interviews NYC DIY Scene
heavy hitters to explore the sanctity of DIY spaces, illuminate the genre's roots, look to its progressively diverse future, and uncover the DIY scene's through line: community.

Inspired to bring diverse cultures together through music, filmmaker Chelsea Odufu explores NYC's Afro House scene, where artists promote progressive African sounds and reclaim space for people of color in electronic music.
